What to do with 202 bad pictures?

200 bad pictures

I went out for some night photography in the city the other day. Actually I went for normal day photography, but since it was raining I couldn’t take my camera out of the bag until the it stopped, and of course it was already late when it did.

I set the shooting mood to black and white, Large JPG and ISO 1600 to get the intentional grainy noisy look in order to get images with high contrast showing just the texture of the scene. I also set the camera to burst drive to eliminate the shaking a bit more.

The pictures on the LCD of the camera were OK, but when I got home and downloaded the pictures to the computer I was shocked when I found out that there were not a single picture worth showing! They were either blurred or simply.. bad 😕 .

So I was flipping through the pictures back and forth looking for something… anything.. decent when it struck me! ‘What if I made a movie out of it?’ 😈

So I loaded the pictures in motion, finalised the thing in Final Cut Pro, up loaded the result to youtube.. and here it is 🙂 :

And here it is in higher quality:

High Quality 12MB

Best Quality (recommended):

Best Quality 20MB

Enjoy it 🙂

  5. nice work! I trully liked it

it’s a stop motion technique, where you creat animation out of photos

I am wondering about the number of shots for the one scene? beacuse the animtion in some part runs smoothly, which means that you had many shots for the same parts.

couple days ago I visited apple site and it was the first time that I knew about (motion) it seems that its much more easier than after effects with a similar results. isn’t it?

  6. It’s kind of a mix between stop motion and time lapse.

The total number of pictures used are 202. First I made a 25 fps movie out of them in Motion, then slowed the movie to 14% of it’s original speed (which caused the short dissolve between each frame and the other) and added the music and titles in FCP.

Each scene has different number of frames. I think the maximum number of frames in a scene is 6 or 7.

Motion is great. Yes it is much easier and FASTER than After Effects. It is simple to use and you see the results of your actions in real time (most of the times). AE on the other hand needs to render the video to the RAM slowly before you can see it in it’s true speed.

But, AE is much more advanced than Motion and can do more tricks specially with the large number of plug-ins you can get. I used Motion 2, but a week or two ago Apple released Motion 3 which has many new features including true 3D effects, so I think it is getting closer to AE 🙂 .

The other problem with Motion is that you can’t buy it separately, you have to buy the whole Final Cut Studio package which include Final Cut, Sound Track, Live Type.. and other stuff which you may not even need, and that is not cheap! But if you can get it in someway or another then you can install Motion without the other stuff if you want 🙂 .
